Living Waters

Throughout scripture we read, “rest in the Lord” (Psalm 37:7; Matthew 11:28-29), “trust in the Lord” (Psalm 25:2; 2 Corinthians 1:9), “wait on the Lord” (Psalm 130:6; Romans 8:25), and God is peace (Proverbs 3:17; Romans 1:7; Galatians 5:22). For many Christians, however, their life is anything but rest, trust, and peace. They want to serve God well, so they try to go to church more, read their Bible more, tithe more, be more patient, have less anger, less selfishness, less bad habits, and less lustful thoughts. Unfortunately, over time, this approach often leads to just more guilt associated with never doing enough of the “more” things and doing far too much of the “less” things.

In his gospel, the Apostle John speaks of an entirely different (and revolutionary) Christianity. He describes the Christian life as God bubbling up within us (John 4:14 NLT). For John, the glorious truth is that we are simply vessels of mercy containing the life of our Creator-God, who is actively living and working in each one of us according to His will, plan, and purpose for our life, and for His glory.

This daily devotional drills deeply into this freedom-filled, guilt-free Christian life that John wants every Christian to experience—full of continuous rest, peace, and priceless joy.
